Auckland Based Personalised Support from Pregnancy to Postnatal Care
Meet Tanya
I’m a dedicated midwife with 18 years of experience supporting families through one of life’s most transformative journeys. I believe that every birth is unique, and I’m here to offer guidance, care, and reassurance every step of the way. My approach is deeply personal – I work closely with each individual, listening to their needs, understanding their hopes, and providing the information and support needed to make empowered choices.
Based in Central Auckland, I provide midwifery care across a range of settings, including home births, water birth and hospital births. Whether you’re navigating pregnancy for the first time or adding to your family, my commitment is to create a warm, trusting partnership that centres on you and your family’s wellbeing. I’m honoured to be part of this journey with you, from pregnancy to birth and into the first precious weeks of parenthood.
I am experienced in secondary care services, with postgraduate qualifications in Nutrition in Pregnancy and Diabetes in Pregnancy. Whether you’re navigating pregnancy for the first time or adding to your family, my commitment is to create a warm, trusting partnership that centres on you and your family’s wellbeing. I’m honoured to be part of this journey with you, from pregnancy to birth and into the first precious weeks of parenthood.
My Role as your Midwife
My role as your midwife is to provide primary midwifery care. Primary care means maintaining the normal aspects of your care. If your pregnancy deviates from
being usual then this is often referred to as requiring secondary care services. My responsibility is to discuss with you your options and refer you to the suitable services of your choice i.e if you had a high blood pressure then we would discuss the impact of high blood pressure during your care, your options and referral to the appropriate services i.e an obstetrician.
As your midwife my goal is to work in partnership, alongside you and your family to ensure that throughout and at the end of your care we have a well mum and a well baby.
If at any stage you require urgent care and are unable to contact either myself or my backup then please contact the staff in Labour & Birthing Suite on (09) 3072888 0r 0800966264 or in an Emergency dial 111
Planned Holidays
We all love a holiday and it is really important for us as midwives to recharge, as we are oncall 24/7 most of the time. You will be assigned a midwife who will provide your visits for you, while I am away.
My immediate backup Melanie Laughton (021 621 260) is oncall for urgent matters & births.
Back-up Care
As you may be aware, midwives are on call 24/7, work irregular, sometimes long but rewarding hours. My back-up midwives and I provide cover for each other. I absolutely trust and respect my immediate backup midwives, they practice simile to myself, are caring, passionate and are of utmost importance to me and my midwifery practice. We generally try to have regular time-off but this can be unpredictable. Time-off is important to us, allowing time to spend with family, as timeout, and for keeping our practises up to date.
We also have a fabulous wider group of midwives that provide backup if needed. The midwifery staff at Auckland Hospital provide amazing support where needed, including the obstetric, paediatric teams and other multi-disciplinary teams. We all work together as to ultimately strive to have a well mum and baby at the end of your care.
Mel Laughton — Backup Midwife
Congratulations on your pregnancy.
I am privileged to be a midwife, and love supporting women and their families through their individual experiences of pregnancy, birth and parenthood.
I am an experienced midwife and over my midwifery career have enjoyed working in tertiary, secondary, primary and homebirth settings.
I believe that pregnancy and birth will be normal for many women, but also understand and respect that some women will experience more complex pregnancies.
I am competent providing both low and high risk maternity care.
I believe my role as a midwife is to support women to make well informed choices about their own midwifery care.
Students
I have participated in the Midwifery First Year of Practice Programme as a mentor. I enjoy supporting the up and coming new generations of midwifery and I often I have a student tagging along beside me.
Obviously it is you choice if you have a student involved in your care.
